Bart’s 1 Mile

Bart’s 1 Mile

Nov. 11- 13

A virtual event over Veterans Day Weekend

On August 6, 2011, a tragedy shook the military community and Americans everywhere. In a single instance, America lost 30 military service members. Among them, 25 American Special Operations personnel, 5 United States Army National Guard and Army Reserve crew members, and one U.S. military K-9– when a CH-47 Chinook helicopter, call sign Extortion 17, was downed in Afghanistan. In the wake of the unimaginable tragedy, a mission was born.

Bart, a Belgian Malinois and military working dog assigned to the elite Navy SEAL Team 6, was one of the 31Heroes we lost on August 6, 2011.

Military working dogs, or MWDs, are used for numerous purposes- but in modern warfare they are primarily used for sniffing out drugs or explosives and guarding prisoners.

Working dogs play a huge role in our military, but until the publicized death of Bart, their work was largely unknown.

Bart is our 31st Hero.

Over Veterans Day weekend, walk a mile with your canine companion in honor of Bart, military working dogs, and all veterans.

If you do not have a dog, you can still participate in honor of Bart.

Walk Bart’s Mile barefoot (be observant of any hazards).

Bart’s Mile is usually done barefoot, for those brave enough to try, during the 31Miles for 31Heroes ruck event in August to honor our four-legged team mates who don’t wear shoes. They say the best way to understand someone is to walk a mile in their shoes, well the same applies, only this teammate didn’t wear them.
